A Short History of the US Virgin Islands
St Thomas was discovered and named by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and the Spanish based in Puerto Rico laid claim to the island. Before this the only known inhabitants were South American Indians. The Spaniards did not use sufficient power to maintain control over the islands and control was exerted by a mix of European settlers and merchants. Finally. the Danish West Indian company consolidated their control over what are now the USVI by purchasing St Croix from the French in 1733.
Pirates were encouraged to use St Thomas, as this was to the financial benefit of the settler merchants. Eventually the pirates became more trouble than they were worth and were driven from the VI waters.
In 1917, the United States purchased what then became the US Virgin Islands for $25 million from Denmark. This was a strategic move to help the war effort during the First World War and a new beginning for St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. One transaction made all of the US Virgin Island real estate fall under the control of the US Government.
